laptop battery life

Is there anyway to improve my laptop battery life?
I received a Dell Latitude D600 latop for Christmas. He owned, but renovated. Most use when connected to a power source, but recently, I've just started is the weight and battery life reduced to less than 30% in 10 minutes. Is this normal with laptops recently renovated? Am I doing something evil? I have my power settings in a fairly conservative level, but even if not, should not drain the battery so fast. Of Suggestions?
Batteries degenerate with age. You have to reach a new battery, an ion, may cost a little more but not leave you dead in the water after 10 minutes:) http://www.batteries.com/index.asp
