How can I get a new laptop to recognize an old laptop hard drive?

I have to use a hard drive with Windows XP on a old laptop into a new laptop. The new laptop does not recognize the hard drive of the age of a laptop. How do I get laptop to recognize the old portable hard drive? The hard drive on new laptop does not work correctly if I use the hard drive of an old laptop that has Windows XP installed on it (the drivers will not be a problem). The hard drive does not work and should work on the laptop age.

Connect cables on the old laptop hard drive. If you've done this, or the cable does not fit, you're lucky, from what I know.
